ICON
PAINTING WORKSHOPS WITH AIDAN HART FOR 2010
May 10-14 and September 13-17
at Walcot Hall, Lydbury North, Shropshire, SY9 8AZ
This year, as in previous
years, we shall be having two workshops, each of five days,
at beautiful
Walcot Hall in Lydbury North, Shropshire (www.walcothall.co.uk).
The teaching
In the May course we shall concentrate on the flesh parts:
faces and hands. The September course will concentrate on
garments and backgrounds. Both will include talks with slides.
We all do the same icon, with Aidan guiding us through the
different stages of building up colours in egg tempera on
a previously prepared gessoed panel.
Participants bring their own pigments, panel and equipment.
Students will be sent a list of materials which they will
need to bring with them to the course, along with instructions
on how to make the gessoed panel. If desired, students can
instead purchase a prepared panel. They will also be sent
a print of the icon that we shall be working on and will
be expected to do a drawing of this before the workshop
begins, so that we have maximum time for learning painting
skills during the course itself.
Each course consists of around seven hours tuition per day
(9.00 am - 5.00 pm, except Monday when 10.30 am–5.00 pm,
and Friday when 9.00 am -1.00 pm). There are places for
twelve participants.
The cost
The cost for
the teaching is £295, with a non-refundable £30 deposit
at registration (but this will be refunded if there are
no places available). This includes a substantial cooked
lunch and morning and afternoon teas with home-made biscuits
and cakes. The non-refundable balance of £260 is due six
weeks before the course begins; an invoice will be mailed
about two weeks before that due date.
For accommodation, see below.
Accommodation
The course offers
self-catering accommodation at Walcot Hall for up to nine
people, in three apartments. There are nine spacious bedrooms,
along with two kitchens and two living rooms (the third
kitchen and living rooms are used for the teaching). Accommodation
is booked through the course and not directly.
The cost is £180 per person. This includes the bed linen
and towels, and the food supplies for you to make your own
breakfast. A non-refundable £20 deposit is required at registration
(but will be refunded if no places are available).
The accommodation is available from 10.00 am Monday until
1.00 pm Friday. Unfortunately the rooms are not available
for the Sunday night before the course, nor the Friday night
after. If you need accommodation for these nights, you can
seek for rooms at the following local places:
- Brumslow Farm phone 01588 680244
- Walcot Farm phone 01588 680243

A
DIPLOMA COURSE IN ICON AND WALL PAINTING, SHROPSHIRE
The Prince’s School of Traditional Arts
In October 2009, Aidan began teaching in Shropshire, England,
a four year part-time Diploma course in icon and wall painting.
It is run and accredited by The Prince’s School of Traditional
Arts (PSTA). The programme consists of two full days and
an evening of tuition and lectures (usually the last Monday
and Tuesday of the month), eleven months of the year for
four years.
New entrants will be accepted in October 2013. Aidan works
with the same twelve students over the period of four years,
hence the wait until 2013.
If you wish to register your interest and be notified when
applications are being accepted for 2013, please contact
Margot Stone at PSTA in London on Margot.Stone@psta.org.uk,
or phone her on 020 7613 8532.
Fees in 2010 were £1,500, but none have yet been set for
the 2013 Diploma programme.
This is perhaps the only course of its type in the English
speaking world, where the skills and theology of icon and
wall painting are taught systematically with regular tuition
over a reasonably long period of time. This gives greater
scope to enter more deeply into the tradition than can be
provided by attendance at isolated five day courses.
WHAT THE COURSE OFFERS
The four year part-time course covers the techniques of
egg tempera icon panel painting and wall painting, placing
these in the context of the theology of the icon. The course
will be taught primarily by Aidan Hart, along with some
visiting tutors. Funding permitting, it is also hoped there
will be some field trips.
Areas to be studied include: pigment and panel preparation;
techniques of egg tempera icon painting and manuscript illumination;
theology of the icon; studies of icon masterpieces; the
relationship of iconography and church architecture and
worship; techniques of secco and fresco wall painting; business
skills.
WHEN
The course will run for four years.
Classes take place usually on the last Monday and Tuesday
of each month (except August), and run from 9 a.m. to 5
p.m., also with an evening lecture/discussion on the Monday
night.
If the last Monday and Tuesday fall on a public-holiday
the classes are re-scheduled.
Students will be expected to do at least two hours of additional
study a week.
WHERE
The classes are held in the beautiful premises
of The Holy Trinity Centre, Church Road, Meole Brace, Shrewsbury,
Shropshire, SY3 9HF.
COST
The fee per year is paid in advance of the course starting
each academic year.
The fee includes tuition, lunch, Monday evening meal, and
refreshments.
Accommodation is the responsibility of the student, but
a list of bed and breakfasts will be provided (average price
about £35 per person per night).
Students are expected to provide all their own materials,
at an estimated cost of around £100 per year.
